This Christmas, Copper, a beagle mix, basked in the warmth of his new home, surrounded by love and care, after years of neglect tied to the end of a chain.

Copperโ€™s story began in Galax, Virginia, where the eight-year-old dog endured harsh conditions outdoors with no shelter, food, or water. Malnourished and infested with parasites, Copperโ€™s plight came to light thanks to an anonymous call to the Twin County Humane Society.

The humane society enlisted the help of two PETA fieldworkers, Adam and Jenny, who were in town for a free spay-and-neuter event. Along with a local animal control officer, they visited the property and found Copper tethered to a short, four-foot chain without any protection from the elements.

Despite his ordeal, Copperโ€™s gentle and affectionate demeanor shone through. When confronted with the possibility of legal action for animal cruelty, his owner surrendered him to the rescuers.

Copperโ€™s transformation began immediately. After receiving much-needed veterinary care, he was adopted by PETA staffers Katherine Sullivan and Dan Paden, newlyweds spending their first holiday together. Copperโ€™s recovery was swiftโ€”his weight nearly doubled, and his spirit was fully renewed.

This holiday season, Copper experienced true joy for the first time. He enjoyed leisurely walks in dog-friendly parks, a bounty of treats under the Christmas tree, and the unconditional love of a family who cherishes him.

โ€œCopperโ€™s recovery and happiness are thanks to one compassionate stranger, a โ€˜Secret Santaโ€™ who spoke up for him,โ€ Katherine shared in a heartfelt blog post.

Now, Copper shares his golden years with his new family, which includes three rescued cats he adores. His story is a reminder of the power of kindness and advocacy.

โ€œThe weather outside may be frightful, but for Copper, life indoors is now delightfulโ€”all because someone cared enough to act,โ€ said PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch.
