Older animals may have a few more gray hairs and a little more life experience, but they still have plenty of love to give. That is the message the San Diego Humane Society is sharing this November as it encourages people to consider adopting a senior pet.

In recognition of Adopt a Senior Pet Month, the organization is reminding potential adopters that older dogs and cats can make wonderful companions. With their personalities already developed and their energy levels often more predictable, senior pets can be an excellent fit for people looking for a loyal friend without the demands of raising a young animal.

Two animals currently hoping for that opportunity are Mike Jack, a 12-year-old dog, and Ali, a 10-year-old cat. Both are waiting at the San Diego Humane Society for someone willing to look beyond their age and welcome them into a permanent home.

โ€œSenior pets have so much to offer, yet they can sometimes be overlooked simply because of their age,โ€ said Dr. Gary Weitzman, the organizationโ€™s president and CEO. He explained that an older animal could be the ideal companion for someone seeking a relaxed walking partner, a cozy couch companion or a devoted friend.

Four reasons to give an older pet a chance

The Humane Society highlights several advantages of welcoming a senior animal into a family.

1. Their personalities are already established.
Unlike puppies and kittens, older pets have developed personalities, predictable sizes and more recognizable energy levels. This makes it easier for adopters to find an animal whose temperament and needs fit their household.

2. They may already understand home life.
Many senior pets have previously lived with families and may be familiar with household routines, basic commands and everyday expectations. This experience can make the transition into a new home easier.

3. They can be wonderful companions for a quieter lifestyle.
Every animal is different, but many older pets enjoy simple pleasures: leisurely walks, comfortable naps in sunny spots and spending time close to the people they love. They can be especially suitable for adopters who prefer a calmer companion.

4. They deserve the chance to enjoy their golden years.
Older animals often arrive at shelters because their families experience unexpected life changes, rather than because of anything the pets have done. Adoption gives them another opportunity to feel secure, cared for and loved.

The San Diego Humane Society hopes more people will recognize that age should never be the reason an animal is passed over. Puppies and kittens may attract plenty of attention, but senior pets have something equally special to offer: companionship, affection and the chance to make someone’s home feel complete.

For Mike Jack, Ali and countless other older animals waiting in shelters, one loving family could make all the difference.
