A casual bike ride along a river near Montreal turned into an unexpected wildlife rescue when a fishing enthusiast spotted a large fish trapped inside a moored pedal boat.
The man, who goes by @BudCasts on TikTok, was cycling near the water last month when something along the shoreline caught his attention.
At first, he thought he might be looking at an injured bird. But after getting closer, he realized the animal in distress was actually a sturgeon — one of the oldest groups of fish still living today.
An Unexpected Discovery by the River
The sturgeon appeared to have jumped from the river and accidentally landed inside the pedal boat, leaving it unable to return to the water on its own.
Once BudCasts realized what had happened, he quickly decided to intervene.
Sharing the unusual encounter online afterward, he jokingly described the rescue as saving a “dinosaur.”
The comparison was surprisingly fitting.
A Quick Rescue Brings the Fish Back to Safety
BudCasts climbed down the embankment and made his way onto the dock where the pedal boat was tied.
He then carefully lifted the large fish and returned it to the river.
Within moments, the stranded sturgeon was back where it belonged.
What had started as an ordinary bike ride had turned into a potentially lifesaving intervention for an animal that might otherwise have remained trapped.
Sturgeon Have Survived for More Than 200 Million Years
Sturgeon are sometimes described as “living fossils” because of their remarkably ancient evolutionary history.
Their ancestors date back more than 200 million years, meaning members of their lineage were swimming through prehistoric waters during the age of the dinosaurs.
Their distinctive appearance also reflects that ancient heritage, with elongated bodies, rows of bony plates and a shape unlike many more familiar modern fish.
Despite surviving dramatic changes to the planet over millions of years, this particular sturgeon found itself defeated by something much more recent: a pedal boat.
Fortunately, a passing cyclist happened to notice.
A Fish Worth Saving
For BudCasts, helping the animal was especially meaningful because of his own enthusiasm for fishing and aquatic wildlife.
He said he felt good knowing his actions had helped save the fish’s life and expressed his admiration for sturgeon, which can grow to impressive sizes.
Their unusual appearance and ancient history, he said, continue to fascinate him.
A Small Act at Exactly the Right Moment
The rescue lasted only a short time, but for the stranded fish it may have made all the difference.
After surviving on Earth through millions of years of environmental change, the sturgeon encountered an unusually modern obstacle — and an equally modern rescuer who happened to be passing by at precisely the right moment.
Thanks to one cyclist deciding to stop and investigate, the ancient fish was returned safely to the river to continue its journey.
