After responding to a vehicle fire in East Oakland on Wednesday evening, firefighters thought their job was done.
But as the smoke began to clear, an unexpected visitor approached the crew.
A distressed pigeon walked toward the firefighters, appearing to seek help after being caught in the smoke from the blaze.

Members of Oakland Firefighters’ Engine 29 quickly realized the bird was struggling to breathe, likely due to smoke inhalation.
Without hesitation, the crew used an oxygen mask to help the exhausted pigeon recover.
According to Oakland Firefighters Local 55, the firefighters believed the bird had inhaled too much smoke during the fire.
“The crew reported the pigeon came up to them seeking help,” the department shared on Facebook.
A Happy Ending
After receiving a few moments of oxygen, the pigeon slowly regained its strength.
“The bird soon flew away after clearing out its lungs,” the fire department wrote.
