John Stessel is known as the β€œShelter Dog Magician,” and for good reason. He uses his magic tricks not just to entertain people, but to help rescue dogs show off their personalities and find loving homes.

Stessel first became interested in magic when he received a magic kit for his eighth birthday. From that moment, he was hooked. Over the next 20 years, he practiced, improved his skills and built up a collection of tricks.

Eventually, he found a way to use those tricks for something meaningful.

One of his most popular routines involves making a dog treat disappear right in front of a shelter dog. For people, it is a funny illusion. For the dogs, it creates a priceless reaction.

Stessel began recording videos of dogs watching treats vanish and then trying to figure out where the snacks had gone. Some dogs looked confused, others sniffed around excitedly, and each one reacted in a completely different way.

That was exactly what made the videos special.

Stessel reached out to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in New Jersey and asked to collaborate. The idea was simple: feature adoptable dogs in his magic videos, share the clips online and help more people notice them.

The trick worked in more ways than one.

As the videos gained attention, people started commenting on how adorable the dogs were. Even better, adoption applications began coming in. The shelter continued working with Stessel and often sent him updates whenever one of the dogs he had featured found a home.

Stessel has also worked with Badass Animal Rescue, a New York-based organization, and has appeared at some of their adoption events.

In his videos, the dogs often wear β€œadopt me” bandanas or vests so viewers know they are looking for families. Stessel also makes sure people understand that, even though the dogs are briefly tricked, they always receive plenty of treats, love and playtime afterward.

For Stessel, this work has become one of the most meaningful parts of his career. He believes magic is not only about illusions β€” it is about creating moments of wonder and joy.

And for him, hearing that even one dog was adopted because of his videos is the greatest magic of all.
