He only found comfort in this one spot ❤️
A Mysterious Cemetery Visitor
In early January, a floppy-eared dog wandered through a cemetery in northern Kentucky. He stopped at a flat gravestone that read “Kenneth G. Bramel, 1945-2025” and sat down.
Visitors tried to approach, but the dog ran deeper into the 35-acre park.
A Curious Routine
For two days, the dog repeated this behavior—sitting at Bramel’s grave but retreating whenever someone got close. Eventually, someone called Rick Buttery, shelter director and animal control officer (ACO) for the Mason County Animal Shelter.

“I immediately went down and tried to catch him,” Buttery said. “He was standoffish, so I would give him treats and sit on the ground.”
Earning His Trust
The dog wore a collar but had no tags. Buttery left dog food near the gravestone and over several days worked to earn his trust.
“He would come just close enough to get a treat, but if you made a move, he would jump back and bark,” Buttery said.

An image of the dog sitting by the headstone was posted online. Many people wondered if he was visiting his deceased owner.
The Truth About Bramel
Bramel’s niece, Carrie Silvey Watson, clarified:
“I don’t remember him ever having a dog, or a pet of any kind,” she said. “But he had a gentle, kind spirit, and I think animals can sense that.”
Kenneth Bramel, a U.S. Army veteran, lived a modest life in Kentucky and passed away last year at 79.
A Sweet Pup Named Peanut
After several failed attempts, a man walking his own dog finally captured the floppy-eared pup.
“He was not microchipped, and we’ve yet to find any connection with the headstone or a local family,” Buttery said.
The dog, named Peanut by the shelter staff, may have been abandoned near the cemetery. Perhaps he returns for comfort, drawn to something familiar. One thing is certain: Peanut is a sweetheart. He loves walks and has the most adorable puppy-dog eyes.

A Forever Home Awaits
Since his story went viral, Peanut has adjusted to his new environment and recovered from neuter surgery. Soon, this loving, mysterious pup will find a forever home.
Watson is delighted that Peanut was drawn to her late uncle’s grave.
“I think my uncle would get a good laugh out of it,” she said. “And he’d be happy that this story has warmed so many hearts.”
