A charity dedicated to rescuing abandoned horses has announced that “the money has run out” as demand continues to rise, with some owners “going without to feed their animals.” HorseWorld, based in Whitchurch, Bristol, cares for 100 horses on-site and supports 200 additional rehomed horses across the region.
As the charity prepares for its open day on Saturday, leaders have highlighted the urgent need for increased support due to rising costs. Sarah Hollister, Head of Equine Welfare, noted, “The cost of living crisis has had a significant impact. Many people we interact with are sacrificing their own needs to ensure their animals are fed. This is becoming increasingly common.”
Hollister also mentioned that other charities are struggling and individuals are finding it difficult to manage. “It’s a challenging time,” she said. “We’ve reached a point where financial resources are exhausted, and the system no longer has the resilience it once did.”
The charity has reported a surge in abandoned and neglected horses. Digital Communications Manager Meg Jackson emphasized the critical need for support, stating, “The more assistance we receive, the more horses we can rescue. Rising costs for hay, veterinary care, and supplies are all contributing to the financial strain we’re experiencing.”
