Earlier this month, six dogs arrived at an animal shelter in Houston after their owner made the heartbreaking decision to surrender them. Among them was Doppy, a 10-year-old hairless Chihuahua whose condition immediately caught the attention of shelter staff.
While all of the dogs needed care, Doppy appeared to require extra medical attention and specialized support. Hoping to find the best possible place for him, a staff member contacted Long Way Home Adoptables, a rescue dedicated to senior dogs and those with special medical needs.
The organization didn’t hesitate.

βWe immediately said, βYes, bring him to us,ββ foster and marketing coordinator Gigi Stem shared.
Rescue Team Discovers Serious Health Problems
When Doppy arrived at the rescue, volunteers quickly realized he had been dealing with much more than the normal challenges of aging.
As a hairless Chihuahua, every skin problem was easy to see. His body was covered in flea bites, leaving his skin irritated and uncomfortable.
βThe first thing we noticed was that he was completely covered in fleas,β Stem explained. βIt was impossible to miss.β
But that wasn’t the only concern.
An Unexpected Diagnosis

As caregivers continued examining Doppy, they noticed he was struggling to breathe.
Veterinary specialists soon discovered the cause: Doppy has an elongated soft palate, a condition more commonly seen in flat-faced breeds such as French Bulldogs.
The extra tissue at the back of his mouth partially blocks his airway, making breathing much more difficult.
Because very little is known about Doppy’s past, it’s impossible to know how long he has been living with the condition or what caused his other health issues.
A Happy Spirit Despite Everything

Despite his medical challenges, Doppy has remained remarkably cheerful.
Instead of letting his health problems define him, the little Chihuahua greets everyone with a wagging tail, endless affection, and an eagerness to make new friends.
βHeβs such a happy little guy,β Stem said. βHe doesnβt seem to realize anything is wrong. Heβs simply loving, affectionate, and always happy.β
Thriving in Foster Care
After leaving the shelter, Doppy settled into a loving foster home, where he quickly began adjusting to his new surroundings.
Living with other dogs has given the senior pup a new burst of energy, and he has embraced every opportunity to play, relax, and enjoy life.

βFrom the moment he arrived, he was rolling onto his back for belly rubs, wagging his tail, and showing everyone just how sweet he is,β Stem said.
Looking Toward a Brighter Future
Although Doppy is not yet ready for adoption, his caregivers are focused on helping him recover before searching for the perfect forever family.
For now, he is receiving the medical care, comfort, and love he deserves while continuing to build his strength.
Everyone at Long Way Home Adoptables hopes that once he is healthy enough, Doppy will find a permanent home where he will be cherished for the rest of his life.
βWe just want him to find an amazing forever home where heβll be loved and appreciated for the unique, wonderful little dog that he is,β Stem said.
After everything he has endured, Doppyβs future is finally filled with hope.
