Guernsey Asian Hornet Team Enhances Nest Destruction Capabilities
The Guernsey Asian Hornet Team has boosted its nest destruction capabilities with the acquisition of a new lance, according to the States of Guernsey.
Introducing the AirAdik Lance
The AirAdik lance is designed to tackle nests located in hard-to-reach areas, such as treetops. When fully extended, it can reach up to 15 meters (50 feet) above ground level. Officials noted that the lance employs a pressurized air system to inject insecticide into the target nests, allowing for their safe removal.
Anticipating Effective Nest Removal
A spokesperson for the States emphasized the urgency of locating and destroying this yearβs nests, stating, βWe anticipate that this new lance will prove invaluable for dealing with difficult-to-reach nests.β
Funding for the New Equipment
The overall cost of the specialized equipment was Β£2,150, with the Guernsey Beekeepers’ Association contributing 50% of this amount. Additionally, Donkey Divers Ltd donated a cylinder and regulator valve to provide a steady flow of compressed air for the lance.
Addressing Challenges with Previous Nests
Francis Russell, the invasive non-native species (INNS) policy and coordination officer, shared insights on the challenges faced in previous nest removals. He explained that, while three nests found this year and most of the 14 nests tackled last year were accessible with the standard 8-meter (26-foot) lance from a mobile elevated platform, some nests were located in difficult terrains.
βRemoving nests found on cliffs at Fermain and two over quarries in the Vale required the expertise of rope access specialists,β Russell noted. βThis new lance will be a game changer, hopefully reducing the instances where we need to work from a mobile elevated platform.β
Expanding Use Across the Islands
The new equipment will be utilized across Guernsey, Herm, and Sark, enhancing the teamβs efforts in managing the Asian hornet population.
