The sweetest goodbye ♥️
A Big Goodbye for a Very Big Dog
In late January, staff members at a Michigan animal shelter prepared for an emotional farewell — and in this case, a very large one.
Zeus, a 140-pound Great Dane who had spent a month at the Michigan Animal Rescue League (MARL) in Pontiac, had finally found a home.
However, before walking out the door, Zeus had one more thing to do.
Hugs for Everyone
As volunteers gathered around, Zeus stood tall on his hind legs and wrapped his massive paws around as many people as he could.
Despite towering over some of the staff, they affectionately called him “baby boy” as they returned his hugs.
According to Tommy Sanfilippo, MARL’s content coordinator, Zeus truly embodied the phrase “gentle giant.” Although he outweighed most dogs he met, he consistently treated both people and animals with kindness and respect.
A Dog Who Loved to Lean
At the shelter, Zeus became known for his signature move: leaning into people for affection.
If someone stood nearby and seemed open to it, Zeus gladly pressed his weight against them, silently asking for pets — and often offering a hug in return.
Staff members described physical touch as one of his “love languages.” Even in his enormous frame, Zeus carried an equally big heart.
From Cold Nights to New Beginnings

Before arriving at MARL, Zeus had lived outdoors in harsh conditions. Fortunately, he adjusted well to shelter life.
With time and care, he learned to socialize comfortably with both humans and other dogs. In fact, he formed a sweet friendship with a small puppy named Billy Jo.
Despite the size difference, Zeus played gently and always behaved like a true gentleman.
A Family Who Fell in Love
When his future family met him, the connection happened quickly.

They visited Zeus several times before officially bringing him home. Soon after, they began sending updates — all filled with positive news.
Now renamed Henry, the once-shelter dog has embraced his new life completely. One video shows him racing around the living room in joyful zoomies, clearly thrilled to have found his place.
Still Making Friends
In addition to settling into his new home, Henry now attends doggy day care, where he reconnects with a few former shelter friends.

Although MARL staff members miss him, they find comfort in knowing he’s exactly where he belongs.
A Chapter Closed, A New One Begins
Looking back, staff members believe Zeus sensed that his time at the shelter was ending.
In true Zeus fashion, he made sure everyone felt his love before he left.
While his hugs will be missed, nothing compares to the joy of watching a shelter dog step into the happy ending he always deserved.
