Frozen Pond Scare for Maine Dog Owners
For a Maine couple, 2026 began with a terrifying ordeal when their mischievous golden retriever ran onto a frozen pond and broke through the ice.
Emergency Response
With no way to reach their dog safely and fearing the deadly cold, the owners immediately called 911, hoping firefighters could respond in time.
Dressed in bright orange wetsuits, the rescue team sprang into action. One firefighter carefully slid across the ice, eventually paddling out to reach the dog, who had impressively kept its head above water despite the freezing conditions.
The Danger of Icy Water
In frigid water, animals not adapted to extreme cold have only minutes before hypothermia sets in, impairing muscle control and the ability to stay afloat. Yet footage captured on a phone showed the golden retriever alert and ready when the rescuer reached the center of the pond.
Safe Return to Shore
The firefighter secured a rope around the dogβs neck, signaled for it to be pulled in, and safely brought both dog and rescuer back to solid ground.
A Happy Ending
Afterward, both rescuer and pooch were checked for hypothermia, with no signs detected. The dog was reunited with its relieved ownersβthough perhaps without the reward of any kitchen scraps that evening.
