“She was cold to the touch …” 😰
Last month, a brush fire broke out along Orange Blossom Boulevard in Sanibel, Florida, and the Bayshore Fire Department quickly arrived to bring it under control.
Among the responders was Julian Roman-Kulwicki, a new volunteer firefighter who had only recently joined the department. He came prepared to help fight the flames — but during the response, he discovered something completely unexpected.
A Tiny Animal In The Ashes
While working near the burned area, Roman-Kulwicki heard faint cries coming from a pile of ashes. When he looked closer, he saw a tiny kitten crawling out, meowing for help.
Without hesitation, he gently picked up the fragile baby and wrapped her in his jacket to keep her warm. At first, he believed she was an ordinary kitten. But after taking a closer look and doing some research, he realized she was actually a baby bobcat.
A Surprising Rescue
Roman-Kulwicki was stunned by the discovery. Since he was still new to the fire department, he had never experienced anything like this before.
Knowing the young bobcat needed expert care, he contacted experienced wildlife rescuer Kaitlyn Doherty. Doherty quickly stepped in and transported the orphaned animal to the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, known as CROW.
Careful Monitoring At CROW
When the bobcat arrived at CROW, the medical team was relieved to find that she had no visible burns or major injuries. Her lungs also appeared clear at first.
Still, the staff remained cautious. Animals rescued from fires can develop breathing problems later due to smoke inhalation, even if they seem stable in the beginning. Because of that, the team kept a close watch on her condition.
Learning To Be Wild Again
The baby bobcat was estimated to be around 4 to 6 weeks old when she was rescued. After several weeks of round-the-clock care, she has grown stronger and is now around 7 to 9 weeks old.
The kitten, later named Ash by Roman-Kulwicki, is not only recovering physically but also learning the skills she will need to survive as a wild bobcat.
Protecting Her Wild Instincts
As Ash heals, CROW’s team is careful to avoid making her too comfortable around humans. Staff members wear face coverings when handling her so she does not bond with people or become dependent on human attention.
This step is important because Ash’s ultimate goal is to return to the wild, where she belongs.
A Promising Future
Since arriving at CROW, Ash has made impressive progress. Her weight has more than doubled, and her caregivers are encouraged by how well she is doing.
Once she is strong enough, Ash will be moved to another facility where she can grow up with other young bobcats. There, she will continue preparing for her eventual release.
Cheering Her On From Afar
For now, Ash is safe, eating well and getting the care she needs to thrive. Her rescuers are hopeful about her future, and Roman-Kulwicki remains grateful that she ended up in the hands of people who know exactly how to help her.
What started as a frightening scene in the ashes has become the beginning of a second chance for one very resilient little bobcat.
