Comedian Felipe Esparza had a whole lineup of fun activities planned for his outing with Whisper β€” an 8-year-old pittie β€” but it didn’t take long for him to figure out that her ideal date involved nothing more than affection and closeness.

At first, Felipe offered Whisper a variety of toys, hoping she’d want to play tug-of-war or fetch. But toys weren’t what she was after. What she did want were kisses, belly rubs and all the love Felipe could give β€” which he was more than happy to provide.

He then tried a different approach: pampering. With a soft brush in hand, Felipe gently groomed Whisper, chatting about how he used to be terrified of pit bulls.

β€œI grew up watching scary movies like Cujo,” he said in a video for The Dodo. β€œThen one day, I worked with comedian Rebecca Corry, who rescues pit bulls. During a show, her dog Todd hopped right into my lap like he’d known me forever. Instant bond. Now I have two pit bulls β€” they’re like babies.”

As he reminisced, Whisper curled up against him, soaking in every bit of affection. She had been waiting in the shelter for about 18 months, and Felipe couldn’t understand why no one had taken her home.

β€œWho wouldn’t want a dog like this?” he said, amazed.

Their final activity was snack time β€” which Whisper definitely approved of. Together they shared fruit and dog-friendly s’mores before Felipe had to say goodbye.

He wrapped up their date with more kisses and gentle reassurances.

β€œI hope someone adopts you real soon,” he told her.
