“There was something in her gaze that broke my heart immediately.”
When Luciana and her partner, Nils, arrived in Tumbes, Peru, they were excited to begin their vacation. Before exploring, they sat down at their hotel’s beachside restaurant to talk about their plans for the week. They expected a peaceful meal by the water, but that moment ended up changing their entire trip.
As they were eating, they noticed a thin stray dog watching them from a short distance away. She was panting and looked tired, but what affected Luciana most was the sadness in her eyes. The dog sat quietly, staring at them as if she was hoping someone would finally notice her.

After a few minutes, the dog walked toward the ocean and tried to drink from the seawater. Seeing that broke Luciana’s heart. She couldn’t stop thinking about how desperate the little dog must have been to try to satisfy her thirst that way.
Over the next several days, the dog stayed close to the hotel. Luciana and Nils began feeding her, petting her and spending time with her whenever they could. Slowly, the frightened dog started to trust them.
The couple named her Marea, and by the end of their vacation, they had made a decision: they were going to take her home to Trujillo, a city about 10 hours away by car.
But just when they were ready to prepare for the trip, Marea disappeared.

Luciana was devastated. She went to bed that night worried they might have to leave without knowing what happened to the dog they had grown to love. Still, she hoped Marea would somehow return.
The next morning, Luciana opened the curtains — and there was Marea, waiting outside their window.
With only a few hours left before leaving, Luciana and Nils quickly began making arrangements. They had originally planned to travel home by bus, but Marea wasn’t allowed onboard. So they canceled their tickets and rented a private van instead, making sure she could travel safely and comfortably.

During the long ride to Trujillo, Marea stayed calm and peaceful. She didn’t bark or resist, almost as if she knew she was finally going somewhere safe.
When Marea arrived in the city, everything was new to her. She was curious, but sudden noises frightened her. Luciana realized she would need time to understand that she no longer had to survive on her own or be afraid.

Later, a vet visit revealed something heartbreaking. Marea had pyometra, a dangerous uterine infection that can be fatal without surgery. The vet told Luciana that if they had not found her when they did, she might not have survived much longer.
Thankfully, Marea’s surgery was successful.
Afterward, she began healing physically and emotionally. At home, Luciana and Nils worked patiently to show her love and security. Outside, her dog walker Daniel and her new dog friends helped her become more confident.

Little by little, Marea transformed. The scared beach dog who once drank from the sea became a loved family member surrounded by care, safety and friendship.
Luciana and Nils never expected to return from their vacation with a dog, but Marea became the most meaningful part of the trip. For Luciana, she wasn’t just a memory from Tumbes — she was the best gift they could have brought home.
