“There was something in her gaze that broke my heart immediately.”

When Luciana and her partner, Nils, arrived in Tumbes, Peru, they were excited to begin their vacation. Before heading out to explore, they sat down at their hotel’s beachside restaurant to go over their plans for the week. They thought it would be a simple meal by the ocean, but it ended up changing everything.

While they were eating, Luciana noticed a thin stray dog staring at them from nearby. The dog was panting and looked tired, but what affected Luciana most was her expression. There was something in the dog’s eyes that immediately broke her heart.

For a few minutes, the dog stayed perfectly still, quietly watching the couple. Then she turned toward the sea and tried to drink from the water. Seeing that made Luciana even more upset. She couldn’t stop thinking about how desperate the little dog must have been to try to ease her thirst that way.

Over the next few days, the dog became part of Luciana and Nils’ daily routine. She stayed around the hotel during the day and night, and the couple cared for her whenever they could. They fed her, petted her and played with her, slowly earning her trust.

By the end of their trip, Luciana and Nils knew they couldn’t leave her behind. They named her Marea and decided to take her home with them to Trujillo, about 10 hours away by car.

But just as they were preparing to leave, Marea disappeared.

Luciana felt devastated. She worried they might have to go home without knowing what had happened to the dog they had already grown attached to. That night, she went to bed hoping Marea would somehow return.

The next morning, Luciana opened the curtains — and there Marea was, waiting outside their window.

With only a few hours left before their departure, Luciana and Nils quickly began making arrangements. They had planned to travel home by bus, but Marea wasn’t allowed onboard. So instead of leaving her behind, they canceled their tickets and rented a private van so she could travel safely with them.

During the long ride to Trujillo, Marea stayed calm and happy. She didn’t bark or resist, as if she understood she was finally going somewhere safe.

When she arrived in the city, everything was new and overwhelming. Marea was curious, but sudden noises frightened her. Luciana and Nils patiently helped her learn that she no longer had to survive on her own or be afraid of being hurt.

Later, a vet visit revealed just how badly Marea had needed help. She had pyometra, a dangerous uterine infection that can be fatal without surgery. The vet told Luciana that if they had not found her when they did, Marea might not have survived much longer.

Thankfully, her surgery was successful.

Afterward, Marea slowly began to heal. At home, Luciana and Nils surrounded her with love and patience. Outside, her dog walker, Daniel, and her new dog friends helped her gain confidence. The caring community around Trujillo’s Parque California also encouraged her as she adjusted to her new life.

Now, Marea is a completely different dog. The frightened stray who once drank from the sea is safe, loved and finally able to relax.

Luciana and Nils never expected to bring a dog home from vacation, but Marea became the most meaningful part of their trip — a living memory they wouldn’t trade for anything.
