When Alexia Sanchez and her girlfriend, Paige, moved into their new apartment, they were thrilled to start this exciting chapter of their lives. But they quickly realized they weren’t the only ones calling their balcony home.
“I heard something running across the screen behind me and freaked out,” Sanchez told The Dodo. “She scared the hell out of us, and we turned around and noticed it was just a squirrel. We immediately burst into laughter.”
The little squirrel had no reaction to their presence, as if she had accepted them as roommates. The couple decided to name her Lola and were eager to watch her go about her daily life.
Not long after, they suspected Lola might be expecting babies—and they couldn’t wait to witness the process. What they didn’t expect was just how soon it would happen.
“We assumed she wouldn’t have them for another month, but boy, were we so wrong,” Sanchez said.
Just a week and a half after moving in, the couple was sitting in their living room, sipping coffee and chatting about their excitement for Lola’s future babies.
“Two hours later, my girlfriend looks over into Lola’s nest and sees two small squirrel babies,” Sanchez said.
Their new apartment just got a little livelier!
Now, Sanchez and Paige have a front-row seat to Lola’s journey as a new mom—and they cherish every moment.
“I pretty much sit at the balcony window all morning, drink coffee, and watch her and the babies,” Sanchez said. “They all seem to be doing well, and she’s such a great mom!”
Wanting to share the joy, Sanchez began posting about Lola and her babies on TikTok. To her surprise, the internet fell in love with them, and now Lola is basically famous.
“Everyone is making jokes about whether we’re paying her rent and that we actually moved into her apartment,” Sanchez laughed. “TikTok is the best place I could’ve shared this story. It’s like we have this huge family now… She’s a viral squirrel and doesn’t even know it!”
