A food-motivated corgi raced to first place in Musselburghโ€™s yearly Corgi Derby, with a hot dog waiting at the finish line providing the perfect incentive.

The winner, a 3-year-old corgi named Islay, crossed the line ahead of the pack during Saturday afternoonโ€™s event. Originally from New Zealand, Islayโ€™s victory came as an unexpected but exciting moment for her owner, Carolyne Ricardo.

Ricardo said the win was especially surprising because they had only found out two weeks earlier that Islay had been selected to compete.

Originally from New York and now working as a veterinarian at the University of Glasgow, Ricardo described Islay as a dog who enjoys sleeping in and usually takes a while to get going in the morning.

Still, she added that the pup can become instantly energetic when something like a squirrel catches her attention.

Held each year at Musselburgh Racecourse, the Corgi Derby has become a favorite Easter attraction for families since it was first introduced in 2022.

The event was launched to celebrate Queen Elizabeth IIโ€™s Platinum Jubilee, paying tribute to the monarchโ€™s well-known love of corgis.

Aisling Johnston, the racecourseโ€™s head of marketing and business development, said the small dogs never fail to become the stars of the day.
