They couldn’t believe their eyes.
A heartbreaking but hopeful rescue story unfolded in St. Paul, Minnesota, when workers discovered a small dog barely clinging to life inside an abandoned vehicle.
An Ordinary Tow Turns Into an Emergency
Employees at Absolute Towing and Recovery towed an abandoned SUV to their impound lot. At first, the vehicle seemed no different from the hundreds of others sitting on the property.
The SUV remained untouched for weeks until workers prepared it for demolition. When they opened the door, they noticed something unusual — a piece of cloth tied over the driver’s seat, a stack of blankets, and a box in the back.

Then they saw something that made their hearts stop.
A Tiny Survivor Hidden in the Back
Curled up in the very back of the SUV was a small, elderly dog.
“In the very back, they found him — a small old man that lifted his head and wagged his tail,” the rescue shared.
The dog, a Chihuahua–dachshund mix, had been trapped inside the car the entire time. He survived on a little water and a few scraps of food left behind.
Despite everything, he was still alive.

Rushed to Safety
The employees immediately contacted Pet Haven, who rushed to help. The dog was brought to safety and given the name Otto.
Veterinarians soon discovered Otto had been suffering from severe neglect, including:
- Overgrown nails
- Rotting teeth
- A small tumor on his head

He was weak, but he finally had people fighting for him.
Healing in a Loving Foster Home
With proper medical care and rest, Otto slowly began to recover. He was placed with a foster family, where he quickly showed how much love he still had to give.
“He adjusted pretty quickly,” said Pet Haven’s executive director. “He’s a Velcro dog, wanting to be next to his foster all the time. He’s even starting to play with the other dog in the home.”
A New Life Is Waiting
Otto is still recovering, but once he is strong enough, he will be ready for adoption and a forever family.
After everything he has endured, one thing is finally certain:
Otto will never be alone again.
“From today forward, Otto will only know love and belonging,” the rescue shared. “He will have the support of family for as long as he is on this earth.”
