Baby Seal Blocks Postman’s Path and Gets a Second Chance at Life
A routine mail delivery in Gorleston, England, turned into an unforgettable rescue when a postman came face-to-face with a tiny, lost seal pup sitting on a doorstep.
An Unexpected Visitor on a Winter Morning
On a damp January day, a postman approached a red brick home and was stopped in his tracks by a small, white-furred seal pup blocking his way.
The young seal looked confused and alone. Though Gorleston is a coastal town, it is extremely rare to see a baby seal wandering through a residential neighborhood.
Realizing something was wrong, the postman immediately called Marine and Wildlife Rescue for help.
A Pup Too Young to Be on Her Own
The seal was only one to two weeks old, identified by her fluffy white coat. Her mother was nowhere to be found.
The day before, the pup had been spotted trying to crawl under a car in a nearby parking lot, but rescuers were unable to locate her at the time.
Luckily, the postman’s quick response allowed rescuers to reach her before she disappeared again.
Weak, Underweight, and in Danger
Rescuers found that the pup was alert but severely underweight. She also had a small puncture wound, likely from being swept into the sea too early.
Seal pups of this age should not enter the water until they shed their white fur, which protects them while they nurse on land.
Rushed to Safety
The tiny seal was transported to the RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre, where she could receive specialized care.
She was officially named Cold Call, a playful nod to her surprise appearance on a stranger’s doorstep. Experts believe rough weather separated her from her mother.
Learning How to Be a Seal
Cold Call is now thriving at the center, gaining weight and making new seal friends.
“She is currently in fish school,” said the center’s manager. “She’s learning how to feed for herself and become independent. She has a typical grey seal attitude — feisty and very vocal.”
A Future Back in the Wild
Over the next few months, Cold Call will continue her rehabilitation. Once she is strong and independent, she will be released back into the wild — ready for a life she almost never had.
