The animals were exhausted, but alive.

Earlier this month in South Africa, a shocking discovery on Facebook Marketplace led to a dramatic rescue.

Someone had listed leopard tortoises for sale — even though these animals are a protected species and cannot legally be captured or sold.

A Risky Plan To Save Them

A concerned citizen alerted authorities, including the South African Police Service and Limpopo Pangolin Collective.

Instead of confronting the seller directly, they planned a sting operation.

An undercover agent posed as a buyer and arranged to meet the seller — traveling nearly 200 miles to make the deal happen.

A Heartbreaking Scene

When the agent arrived, they found 14 tortoises crammed into a bucket in the back of a truck.

The animals were:

  • Severely dehydrated
  • Underweight
  • Stressed and exhausted

But thankfully, they were still alive.

The agent gave a signal — and police moved in, arresting the seller on the spot.

On The Road To Recovery

The rescued tortoises were taken to Umoya Khulula Wildlife Centre for urgent care.

Rescuers reported that:

  • Every single tortoise was dehydrated
  • More than half were dangerously underweight

With proper treatment, they began to recover.

Why This Matters

Leopard tortoises aren’t just beautiful — they’re vital to their ecosystem.

  • They feed on native plants and grasses
  • They can live up to 50 years
  • They can grow surprisingly large (up to 40 kg / 88 lbs)

Keeping them as pets in small enclosures, fed the wrong diet, can seriously harm them.

“They are not pets. They are not ornaments. They deserve to be free,” rescuers said.

A Happy Ending — And A Warning

Thanks to the operation:

  • 10 tortoises have already been released back into the wild
  • The remaining 4 are recovering and expected to follow soon

This rescue is a powerful reminder that illegal wildlife trade is still happening — often in plain sight online.

But it also shows that when people speak up, lives can be saved. 🌍🐢
