β€œIt’s so special to see these animals just getting to be themselves.”

When animal rescuer and foster mom Caitie Evers was invited to spend a day volunteering at Black Beauty Ranch, she didn’t hesitate. What she found on the 1,400-acre sanctuary was nothing short of extraordinary.

A Sanctuary Built on Second Chances

Black Beauty Ranch is part of Humane World for Animals, an organization dedicated to ending animal cruelty worldwide. Home to over 600 animals across 40 species, the ranch offers a permanent refuge for animals who have survived neglect, abuse, and abandonment β€” giving them the space and care they were always owed.

Charlotte the Potbelly Pig: Finally Room to Breathe

The first animal Evers got to meet was Charlotte, a potbelly pig who arrived at the ranch after her previous sanctuary ran out of space for her. Charlotte’s story is all too common β€” people purchase pigs under the false belief that they’ll stay small, only to find themselves overwhelmed as the animals grow.

To get Charlotte’s attention away from the camera crew, Evers and Sue Tygielski, senior managing director of Black Beauty Ranch, spread peanut butter on a ball as a treat. Charlotte had the time of her life.

“I am obsessed with pigs, and I love her so much,” Evers said.

“It’s so special to see these animals just getting to be themselves, playing, foraging, finally having the space and care that they’ve always deserved,” she added.

Stewie the Donkey and the Ranch’s Founding Residents

Next on the visit was Stewie the donkey, rescued in 2006 as part of a neglect case and one of the earliest animals to call Black Beauty Ranch home. Stewie and his friends hold a special place in the heart of the sanctuary β€” living reminders of how far the ranch has come.

After spending time with the donkeys, Evers and Tygielski drove through the ranch’s sprawling 800-acre pasture, home to 400 horses living freely across the open landscape.

Cookie Monster: From a Railroad Track to a Ranch Paradise

The most moving encounter of the day was with Cookie Monster, a 22-year-old horse with a story that is as heartbreaking as it is inspiring. He was found tied to a railroad track, weighing 400 pounds less than he does today. Staff also discovered he was blind in one eye.

Recovery was slow and required enormous patience β€” both physical healing and learning to trust people again. Today, Cookie Monster is thriving.

“Someone didn’t value him at all,” Tygielski said. “And look at the beautiful animal he is today.”

Because of his unique needs, Cookie Monster receives more intensive health monitoring from a dedicated staff and veterinary team. He spends his days with his companions and enjoys horse-friendly cookie treats β€” which is exactly how he got his name.

A Place Where Animals Are Finally Valued

As Evers spent time with Cookie Monster, the weight of what Black Beauty Ranch represents sank in β€” hundreds of animals, each with their own story of hardship, now living in safety, dignity, and peace.

For anyone who cares about animal welfare, it’s a reminder that sanctuaries like this one don’t just save lives. They restore them.
