A seagull nicknamed “Steven Seagull” has been banned from a convenience store in Wyke Regis, Dorset, after a six-year spree of pilfering packets of crisps. Staff at Lyndale Central have resorted to posting signs urging customers to “close the door” behind them to thwart Steven’s thievery.

Store manager Stuart Harmer reported that the crafty seagull had stolen around 30 packets of crisps in just the past two months. β€œTrying to explain to the powers that be that I’ve got stock loss because of a seagull – they think it’s a joke,” Harmer said.

According to Harmer, Steven has developed a routine: β€œHe comes in the shop when the doors open, peeks around the corner, snatches a packet of crisps, and flies off.” Steven has a particular fondness for BBQ beef flavored crisps. Once outside, he uses his beak to open the packet and enjoys his loot in the streets with his fellow feathered friends.

β€œLoads of customers have seen him do it; he’s not shy,” Harmer added. Despite being β€œvery daring and sometimes annoying,” Harmer admits, β€œwhat can you do?”

To combat Steven’s antics, the staff have posted reminders for customers to keep the door shut. However, Harmer notes that Steven is so determined that he will even peck at the door to get it open. In a bid to deter him, the store tried offering spicy-flavored crisps, but Steven remained unfazed, continuing to seek out his BBQ beef favorites.
