βYou could see how confused and terrified he was.β
A mobile dog groomer was stopping at a 7-Eleven in California when she noticed something tiny moving among the bushes along the parking lot.
Peeking out from the shrubbery was a frightened Chihuahua named Benito.
He had apparently been abandoned there with the few belongings he had: a crate, a food bowl and a water bowl.
When the groomer approached, Benito became frightened and immediately retreated into his crate.
Realizing that the crate might be the safest way to keep him from running away, the woman carefully secured the door and contacted a local animal shelter for help.
Unfortunately, the shelter she called was not an ideal place for Benito. It was an indoor-only facility with limited ventilation and a high euthanasia rate.
When news of the frightened Chihuahua reached the animal rescue group Let’s Rescue Dogs, its members knew they needed to act quickly.
Volunteer Cynthia Lopez was sent to pick Benito up before the shelter could take him.
Soon, Benito was safely in the care of Let’s Rescue Dogs founder Elena Rodriguez.
Rodriguez was immediately struck by how frightened the little dog was.

βHis eyes were huge,β Rodriguez said. βYou could see how confused and terrified he was.β
Benito had clearly been through a frightening experience. After being abandoned alone beside a busy parking lot, he needed somewhere quiet where he could finally feel safe.
Rodriguez prepared a comfortable space for him in her bathroom and gave him plenty of time to settle down.
She began offering him small pieces of food, slowly trying to show him that he could trust her.
At first, Benito remained nervous.
Then Rodriguez gave him a toy.
The little Chihuahua’s reaction was an important turning point.
βHe was so excited to have it, and we started to play a little game of tug-of-war together,β Rodriguez said.

That simple game completely changed the mood.
For the first time, Benito seemed to relax around Rodriguez. The frightened dog began to understand that he was safe and that the person caring for him wasn’t going to hurt him.
The breakthrough even allowed Rodriguez to give him a much-needed bath.
Once Benito was clean and feeling more confident, he was ready to explore something new: a yard filled with other rescued dogs.
As soon as he was outside, his personality began to shine.
Benito raced around the grass and played with the other dogs, running and bouncing around as though he had completely forgotten the fear he had felt just days earlier.
The tiny Chihuahua who had been hiding in a crate at a 7-Eleven was suddenly acting like a happy, playful puppy.
Today, Benito is staying in a foster home while he waits to find a permanent family.

For Rodriguez, watching his transformation has been incredibly rewarding.
She is especially grateful that Benito ended up with people who were willing to see past his fear and give him the patience he needed.
βHe has a real joy for life and has so much love inside that tiny, little body,β Rodriguez said.
Seeing Benito go from a terrified little dog hiding in a crate to an energetic and affectionate pup is exactly why rescuers keep doing what they do.
βSeeing him realize he was safe and watching him go from that terrified little pup to an energetic, happy bouncing boy is what itβs all about,β Rodriguez said.
