“All three are healthy …”
Staff at a campground in Bourton-on-the-Water, United Kingdom, recently discovered that some unexpected guests had quietly moved in for the summer.
The visitors were not campers, and they certainly had not brought a tent. Instead, three baby blue tits were found nestled inside a cigarette disposal box attached to a post at Wildings Holidays.
At some point, the birds’ parents had apparently decided that the small container would make a suitable place to build a nest. Hidden from view, the chicks had been growing inside while campground visitors passed by without realizing they were there.
The discovery came as a surprise to staff, especially because the location could have been dangerous if guests continued using the cigarette bin normally.
Once employees realized what was inside, they quickly took action.
A handwritten notice was placed near the bin asking visitors not to use it while the young birds were living there. The simple warning effectively turned the cigarette box into a temporary protected nesting site.
The chicks also did their part to make their presence obvious.
Videos shared by the campground showed the tiny birds peeking out and making plenty of noise from inside their unusual home. Anyone approaching the bin would have had little trouble realizing that it had temporarily been claimed by a feathered family.
Fortunately, campground guests respected the warning and gave the birds the space they needed.
As the weeks passed, all three chicks continued developing normally. Staff later reported that the young birds appeared healthy and were getting close to the point when they would be ready to leave the nest.
For a place designed to welcome human travelers, hosting three tiny birds was certainly an unexpected addition to the summer guest list.
Still, the campground’s willingness to protect the nest allowed the chicks to finish growing in peace.
The birds have likely since flown away to begin life on their own, leaving behind an empty cigarette box and a memorable story for the people who helped keep them safe.
What started as an unusual nesting choice ultimately became a small example of how giving wildlife just a little extra space can make all the difference.
