An everyday walk went very wrong.
Retractable leashes are popular with dog owners because they allow pets more freedom to explore while still giving their owners some control over the length of the lead.
But their convenience can come with risks that standard fixed-length leashes do not have.
One Texas dog owner learned that lesson firsthand after a simple mistake at the beginning of a walk quickly turned into a stressful chase through his neighborhood.
A Dropped Leash Sparked the Chaos
Alex Hernandez was heading out with his two dogs when he accidentally dropped the plastic handle of his smaller dog’s retractable leash.
The dog immediately took off.
As the leash handle bounced and scraped along the ground behind him, Hernandez was forced to run after the frightened pup while also trying to keep control of his second dog.
The situation quickly became dangerous, particularly with cars nearby.
Retractable Handles Can Frighten Dogs
One concern with retractable leashes is what can happen if an owner loses their grip.
Unlike a lightweight traditional leash, retractable models usually have a bulky plastic handle containing the spring mechanism.
When dropped, the handle can make loud noises as it drags behind a running dog.
For a nervous or easily startled pet, that sound may make the situation worse, potentially causing the animal to believe something is chasing them.
Whether that was exactly what frightened Hernandez’s dog is unclear, but the runaway leash certainly added to the confusion.
Catching the Dog Didn’t End the Problem
After chasing the dog through the neighborhood, Hernandez finally managed to catch up and grab the retractable leash handle.
For a moment, it appeared the ordeal was over.
Then the leash itself broke.
Suddenly, the dog was loose once again, forcing Hernandez to continue the rescue attempt.
Fortunately, despite nearby traffic and the stressful circumstances, neither dog nor owner was injured.
Hernandez eventually managed to get both pets safely back home.
Retractable Leashes Can Fail Unexpectedly
The incident highlights another potential weakness of retractable designs.
These leashes rely on an internal spring and locking mechanism that repeatedly extends and retracts the cord or tape.
If part of that system breaks, the owner can lose control of the dog without warning.
Traditional leashes are generally simpler, with fewer moving components that can malfunction during a walk.
More Freedom Can Mean Less Immediate Control
Retractable leashes are designed to let dogs wander farther away from their owners while still remaining attached.
That flexibility may be useful in certain open spaces, but it can also reduce the owner’s ability to quickly pull a dog close when another animal, cyclist, person or vehicle suddenly appears.
The longer the leash is extended, the more difficult it can become to react quickly to an unexpected situation.
One Scare Was Enough to Change His Mind
After getting his dogs safely home, Hernandez shared a follow-up showing that the incident had changed the way he planned to walk them.
He decided to stop using retractable leashes and switch to standard fixed-length ones instead.
After experiencing a dropped handle, a runaway dog and then a broken leash during the same walk, the simpler option suddenly seemed much more appealing.
A Reminder to Choose the Right Leash
Retractable leashes can be convenient, but Hernandez’s experience shows why dog owners should consider the potential drawbacks before relying on one.
A secure grip, dependable equipment and enough control to respond quickly can become especially important around roads and other hazards.
For Hernandez, one frightening chase through the neighborhood was more than enough to convince him that a traditional leash was the safer choice.
