She knew she had to do something.
A young osprey found alone in a marsh on Long Island received a helping hand from local rescuers before being safely returned to his family just days later.
Residents of Mount Sinai Harbor, a waterfront community in Brookhaven, New York, became concerned after noticing an animal struggling near the shoreline. Unsure whether it was injured or in danger, they contacted Jaeger’s Run Animal Rescue for assistance.
A Nighttime Search Through the Marsh
By the time rescuer Lisa Jaeger arrived with raptor expert Bobby Horvath, the sun had already gone down.
The pair carefully made their way through the marsh grass using a flashlight to guide them.
Before long, they spotted the animal they had been searching for — a young osprey perched alone on a branch close to the ground.
Above them, members of the bird’s family could still be seen around the nest.
The Fledgling Was in a Vulnerable Position
The rescuers determined that the osprey was a fledgling, meaning he was at the stage when young birds begin leaving the nest and learning to fly.
He may have fallen or ventured out before he was fully ready.
Jaeger and Horvath initially hoped to avoid interfering, particularly because his family was still nearby.
But leaving the young bird close to the ground overnight created another concern. In such an exposed position, he could become vulnerable to predators or other dangers in the marsh.
The team decided temporary intervention was the safest option.
Rescuers Carefully Secure the Young Bird
Jaeger gently placed a net over the fledgling.
When he remained relatively calm, she carefully picked him up while wearing protective gloves.
Although the osprey was still young, he was already a powerful bird with an impressive wingspan of approximately four feet.
The rescuers safely transported him to their facility, where he could rest away from the dangers of the marsh.
A Safe Place to Wait Out the Weather
At the rescue center, the osprey was given time to decompress while unfavorable weather passed through the area.
The plan was always to return him to his family as quickly as possible rather than keep him in care unnecessarily.
After several days, conditions improved enough for rescuers to take him back to the beach near Mount Sinai Harbor.
An Emotional Reunion
Once returned to the area where he had been found, the young osprey was able to reconnect with his family.
For Jaeger, watching him return to where he belonged made the entire rescue worthwhile.
“It was beautiful,” she said of the reunion.
Back Where He Belongs
The encounter offered Jaeger another opportunity to see one of the region’s remarkable wild birds at close range while helping it through a vulnerable moment.
She later expressed her gratitude for being able to assist animals like the young osprey and witness their beauty firsthand.
Thanks to concerned residents who noticed something was wrong and rescuers who responded after dark, the fledgling received the temporary protection he needed before returning safely to his family and continuing life in the wild.
