“You could see the sadness in his eyes”
When Cooper, an 8-year-old Labrador, first met his family’s new kitten, Winston, he wasn’t completely sure what to do with him.
Cooper was calm, gentle and quiet, while Winston arrived full of energy and confidence. The tiny kitten quickly decided that Cooper was going to be his best friend — whether the older dog was ready or not.
At first, Cooper kept his distance. But Winston was persistent. He followed Cooper around, stayed close to him and slowly won him over.
Before long, the two became inseparable.

Even though they had very different personalities, Cooper and Winston found plenty of things they both loved. They spent their days napping in sunny spots, exploring the farm together and curling up near the fireplace during the colder months.
Their family often found them side by side, relaxing in the front yard or sleeping together indoors.

Their friendship seemed unshakable — until Winston suddenly disappeared one night.
Cooper immediately seemed to understand that something was wrong. Day after day, he sat in the same spot in the front yard where he and Winston usually rested together in the sun.
He would face the edge of the property and stare into the distance, waiting for his friend to come home.
His family could see how heartbroken he was. Cooper looked anxious and sad, and he refused to leave his lookout spot for hours at a time.

Normally, dinner was Cooper’s favorite part of the day. But while Winston was missing, even food couldn’t pull him away. His family had to bring his meal outside so he could eat while continuing to watch for the kitten.
After several days, the family was deeply worried about Winston and devastated for Cooper.
Then, one morning, everything changed.
Winston came home.
Everyone was relieved, but Cooper seemed the happiest of all. The sadness in his eyes disappeared, and it was clear that having Winston back lifted a huge weight from him.
Since Winston’s return, the two friends have become even closer. They spend more time together than ever, sticking side by side throughout the day.
Their family isn’t sure whether Cooper now feels responsible for keeping a closer eye on Winston, or whether the two simply missed each other too much during their time apart.
Either way, one thing is clear: Cooper and Winston’s bond is stronger than ever.
