“I couldn’t believe it …”
When Manny arrived at work the other day, he thought it would be a normal shift with his fellow landscaper. They had landscaping jobs to finish and a regular list of tasks ahead of them. But everything changed when Manny heard faint, muffled cries coming from a dump trailer on the site.
At first, he wasn’t sure if he had heard correctly. The sounds were quiet and buried deep inside the dumpster, so he walked around it to make sure the noise was really coming from inside.
Then he heard it again.
The cries sounded like kittens.
Manny and his coworker immediately stopped working and climbed into the dump trailer. They began carefully searching through the pile of trash and debris, listening closely as the cries became clearer. Soon, they realized there was more than one kitten trapped inside.
They felt a strong sense of urgency, but they also knew they had to move slowly. The babies were hidden somewhere beneath the debris, and digging too quickly could accidentally hurt them.
For about an hour, the two men gently moved pieces of trash aside, working carefully until they finally reached the first kitten. Manny pulled the tiny calico baby out and held onto him while his coworker kept searching.
When they found another kitten, Manny needed somewhere safe to put the first one. He looked down and realized the pockets in his work clothes were deep enough to hold a tiny kitten. So he gently tucked the baby into his pocket, where the kitten fit perfectly.
As more kittens were discovered, Manny kept placing them safely in his pockets. By the time the last one was pulled from the trash, the landscapers were walking back to their vehicles with their pockets full of rescued kittens.
Finding and saving four kittens was not part of their workday plan, but it quickly became the most meaningful thing they did that day.
After the rescue, Manny drove the kittens to an animal shelter so they could be checked and cared for. He also reached out to local trappers for help finding their mother.
The kittens are now safe with Michigan Humane, while Manny continues checking traps and watching for their mom. She has reportedly been seen nearby, but rescuers are still working to catch her so the family can hopefully be reunited.
Manny hopes the mother cat is found soon. He also hopes to adopt one of the kittens himself if he gets the chance.
What started as an ordinary landscaping shift became a rescue Manny will never forget. Thanks to his quick response and his coworker’s careful help, four tiny kittens were pulled from danger and given a much brighter future.
