BirdCare Aotearoa, a West Auckland charity, is facing distress following a break-in at its wild bird hospital in Green Bay during the early hours of the week.

The Avonleigh Rd premises were targeted around midnight on Thursday, according to the police.

Administrative items were stolen, and damage occurred during the break-in, leading to deep disappointment for BirdCare Aotearoa. The potential financial repercussions for the organization, New Zealand’s largest avian hospital caring for over 6000 rescued birds annually, are substantial.

Seeking a proactive solution, the organization is currently in the process of securing funding for an upgraded security system. This includes additional cameras to enhance bird safety monitoring.

Despite the setback, relief comes from the fact that none of the birds were harmed, as the incident was confined to the administration area. The dedicated team, many of whom are volunteers, expressed their shaken feelings.

“This break-in is a significant blow for our center, especially considering the challenges we’ve recently faced. We’ve reached out to the community for support due to increasing costs and declining revenue,” shared the spokesperson.
