Midway through an exhausting transatlantic rowing challenge, three British athletes aboard a small boat chose compassion over competition when they encountered an animal in serious trouble.
Far from land and with no hope of rescue unless someone intervened, a sea turtle’s life hinged on a split-second decision.
The crew — rowing under the team name Call to Earth — were taking part in the World’s Toughest Row, a punishing 3,000-mile journey from the coast of North Africa to the Caribbean. While scanning the open water, they noticed a turtle floating helplessly, tightly wrapped in discarded fishing net.
“It felt like he was calling out to us,” the team — Emma Wolstenholme, John Hammond, and Stacey Rivers — later shared online.
Stopping meant sacrificing precious progress in the race, but the decision was instant. The rowers turned their boat around and rushed to help.
Footage recorded onboard shows the rescue unfolding: John reached out to secure the turtle, Stacey began cutting through the tangled netting, and Emma used a knife to free the remaining strands — even managing to film the moment as it happened.
“It was pure teamwork,” the crew wrote, noting that their race entry is meant to raise awareness for ocean conservation. “This moment says everything about why we’re out here.”
Once freed, the turtle wasted no time, swimming off into the vast Atlantic as the rowers cheered — a quiet victory that mattered far more than miles or rankings.
“This is bigger than a race,” the team reflected. “It’s a reminder that the ocean depends on us.”
