A Long-Awaited Arrival

Colchester Zoo has welcomed its first newborn chimpanzee in almost 17 years.

The infant was born early on Saturday morning to first-time mum Kora and father Napoleon. The zoo confirmed that all three apes are doing well.

Visitors are asked to keep quiet near the enclosure to allow the new family to settle in.

Meet the Parents

Kora was born at the Essex zoo in November 1999, while Napoleon arrived last year from a zoo in Fuengirola, Spain.

He was introduced to the zoo’s three female chimpanzees a few weeks after his arrival in April.

The newborn’s name and sex have not yet been announced.

A Modern Home for Chimpanzees

In 2018, Colchester Zoo redeveloped the chimpanzee enclosure at a cost of Β£2 million, creating a safe and enriched environment for the new arrival and its family.
