A city zoo has shared the sad news of the passing of its three beloved capybaras, attributing their deaths to age-related health issues.
Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park announced on Wednesday that Katherine, Gertrude, and Esmeralda had died after being closely monitored by the zooβs veterinary team.
βAll three girls had been receiving ongoing care due to declining health, and at 13 years old, they had reached the later stages of their natural lifespan,β the zoo explained. βFollowing careful evaluation, the most humane and compassionate decision was made to let them go peacefully.β
The statement emphasized that the choice was made with great thought and with the animalsβ wellbeing as the highest priority.
Capybaras, the worldβs largest rodents, are native to South America and typically live around seven to ten years in the wild.
Reflecting on the trioβs time at the park, the zoo shared: βKatherine, Gertrude, and Esmeralda were more than just animals in our care β they were cherished members of our community. Known for their gentle nature, curiosity, and unique personalities, they brought joy to everyone who encountered them.β
The statement concluded: βWhether relaxing beside the water or quietly bonding with one another, they created lasting memories. Weβll miss them dearly β both as individuals and as a trio β and we know many of you will too.β
