A city zoo has shared the sad news of the passing of its three beloved capybaras, attributing their deaths to age-related health issues.

Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park announced on Wednesday that Katherine, Gertrude, and Esmeralda had died after being closely monitored by the zoo’s veterinary team.

β€œAll three girls had been receiving ongoing care due to declining health, and at 13 years old, they had reached the later stages of their natural lifespan,” the zoo explained. β€œFollowing careful evaluation, the most humane and compassionate decision was made to let them go peacefully.”

The statement emphasized that the choice was made with great thought and with the animals’ wellbeing as the highest priority.

Capybaras, the world’s largest rodents, are native to South America and typically live around seven to ten years in the wild.

Reflecting on the trio’s time at the park, the zoo shared: β€œKatherine, Gertrude, and Esmeralda were more than just animals in our care β€” they were cherished members of our community. Known for their gentle nature, curiosity, and unique personalities, they brought joy to everyone who encountered them.”

The statement concluded: β€œWhether relaxing beside the water or quietly bonding with one another, they created lasting memories. We’ll miss them dearly β€” both as individuals and as a trio β€” and we know many of you will too.”
