“It’s unbelievable …”
A few months ago, staff at The Animal Foundation (TAF) were met with a heartbreaking sight they would never forget. They’d helped countless sick and injured animals before, but nothing prepared them for the tiny 8-pound pug who arrived trembling in a blanket, her skin flushed red and completely hairless.
The little dog, later named Talulah, was only a year old, yet she looked as though she had suffered far longer than that.
“She’s only a year old, and in unimaginable pain,” TAF wrote on Facebook. “Her tiny, malnourished 8-lb body is cracked, bleeding, and raw.”
Talulah’s entire body was inflamed from an extreme case of mange — one of the worst the shelter team had ever seen. Every inch of her bright pink skin hurt. Her paws were swollen, her body shook constantly, and she barely had the strength to lift her head.
“She’s itchy, swollen, and shivering from the pain,” the team shared. “She can barely stand. She can’t play. She’s a shell of a dog, but she wants to feel better.”
Though she was suffering, Talulah still looked at her rescuers with soft, hopeful eyes — a small spark that told them she hadn’t given up.
Knowing she needed around-the-clock care, TAF immediately arranged for a medical foster home. Her treatment plan was extensive but carefully crafted to ease her pain and fight the infection raging under her skin.
“She’s getting medicated baths, mousse treatments to soothe her skin, antibiotics to fight the infection, and pain medication to give her some much-needed relief,” TAF explained. “Mange is caused by microscopic mites. It’s treatable, but her recovery will take weeks…”
And so her healing journey began.
Week One: A Glimmer of Hope
After just a week of consistent treatment, the change was already noticeable. The painful redness faded bit by bit. Small patches of black hair began to poke through her skin. And most heartwarming of all, her tail — once stiff with discomfort — started to wag.
“Her skin is healing, her tail’s wagging, and her sass is starting to show,” TAF wrote.
For the first time, Talulah showed signs of comfort. She explored her foster home, curiously sniffing her surroundings, and even attempted a few playful steps.
Week Two: A New Energy
At two weeks, the transformation was undeniable. The cracks in her skin had smoothed over, and she no longer winced when touched. Her personality began to shine through: energetic, wiggly, and full of curiosity.
“Talulah is wiggly, curious, and looking great!” TAF shared. “No longer red and itchy, she can now begin to heal.”
She continued receiving baths, medication, and, of course, lots of gentle kisses from her foster family.
Week Three: A Different Dog
By the third week, Talulah had blossomed into a completely different pup. Her energy skyrocketed. She played eagerly with her foster siblings, zooming around the house with her new strength. Each day brought more hair growth, more confidence, and more joy.
Her rescuers could hardly believe she was the same dog.
“It’s unbelievable,” TAF wrote. “And this is only the beginning.”
A Forever Home — And a New Name
Almost two months after her rescue, in late September, Talulah received the happiest news of her life: she had been adopted.
Her new family renamed her Wednesday, fitting her sweet but sassy personality. In her forever home, she blossomed even more. Her once hairless body was now covered in shiny black fur, and her playful spirit filled her new home with joy.
“Today, Wednesday looks like a completely different dog,” TAF wrote in an update. “She’s cuddly, sassy, and now has two tortoise siblings, Herbie and Pie.”
Her new mom, Annette, quickly fell in love with Wednesday’s unique charm.
“I think our favorite part is how sassy she is. When she’s in the mood to snuggle, she’s also a little cuddle bug,” Annette told TAF. “She’s brought so much joy into our house.”
From a hairless, trembling puppy in unbearable pain to a vibrant, silly, deeply loved family member — Wednesday’s transformation is nothing short of remarkable.
Thanks to compassionate rescuers, a dedicated foster family, and a forever home full of love, this once-suffering little pup now has the carefree, happy life she always deserved.
