A routine day of grounds maintenance in Risca, Wales, took an unexpected turn when a council employee noticed an abandoned shopping bag beside a community center’s basketball court.
At first, the bag didn’t seem unusual. But as the worker looked more closely, he noticed a tiny kitten peeking out from inside.
Realizing the young cat had been left there alone, he immediately rushed over to help.
Inside the bag, the worker found a three-month-old kitten along with a small supply of food and a soft blanket. Although someone had apparently tried to provide a few comforts, the frightened kitten was covered in fleas and appeared confused after being abandoned.
No one else was nearby, and there were no clues explaining how the kitten had ended up there.
Without hesitation, the council worker picked up the kitten, took her home to ensure she was safe, and then transported her to a veterinarian for a complete medical examination.
Fortunately, the kitten had been discovered before her condition became more serious.
According to the RSPCA, veterinarians found that she was in generally good physical condition. She maintained a healthy body weight and required treatment only for minor health issues, including the flea infestation.
However, one important piece of information was missing. The kitten had not been fitted with a microchip, making it impossible to identify an owner or determine the circumstances that led to her abandonment.
Although rescuers appreciated that the person who left the kitten had included food and a blanket, animal welfare officials stressed that abandoning a pet is never an acceptable solution, particularly during the hot summer months when temperatures can quickly become life-threatening.
Had the kitten remained unnoticed much longer, the outcome could have been far worse.
Now safely under the care of the RSPCA, the young cat is receiving the attention and treatment she needs while staff prepare for the next stage of her recovery.
Animal welfare inspector Sophie Daniels encouraged anyone struggling to care for a pet to seek assistance rather than abandoning an animal.
Thanks to the quick actions and compassion of the council worker, what could have become a tragic situation instead ended with the kitten receiving a second chance at a safe and healthy future.
