“I found the whole situation to be super funny …”

Kayla Adkins has developed a habit of keeping an eye out for animals that might need assistance. Having rescued countless creatures over the years, she never ignores a situation that looks suspicious.

So when she recently noticed what appeared to be an injured squirrel lying motionless in a field near her home, she immediately became concerned.

From a distance, the small gray shape looked exactly like a squirrel that had been hurt. Adkins watched it carefully for a short time, expecting some sign of movement, but the animal never appeared to budge.

Convinced something was wrong, she decided to walk over and investigate.

As she got closer, however, the mystery quickly unraveled.

What she had been so worried about was not a squirrel at all.

Instead, the object turned out to be nothing more than a crumpled piece of fabric that happened to resemble the outline of a small animal when viewed from afar.

Looking back on the experience, Adkins laughed at how convincing the illusion had been. She admitted she had been almost completely certain she was looking at a squirrel before discovering the truth.

Although the mistaken identity was amusing, she was also relieved. Finding an abandoned piece of cloth was certainly preferable to finding an injured wild animal in need of emergency care.

Even after the mix-up, Adkins says she has no intention of changing her routine. Whenever she notices what might be an animal in distress, she will continue stopping to check, believing it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Her false alarm may have ended with a laugh, but it also reflects the compassion that has guided her rescue efforts for years—and if a real squirrel ever does need help, it’s fortunate someone like Adkins is paying attention.
