“This is what love, faith and believing in miracles can do.”
Last July, Suzette Hall received an urgent call from a Good Samaritan who had discovered a small white dog lying helplessly in an alley. The little pup couldn’t move, and the man knew he needed help immediately. Without hesitation, he contacted Hall’s rescue organization, Logan’s Legacy 29.
When Hall arrived, she was heartbroken to find the dog still lying in the same spot where he’d been discovered. He appeared to have been abandoned, and she feared he might have been hit by a car and left unable to walk.
“He just lay there, unable to move his back legs, in so much pain and all alone,” Hall wrote on Facebook. “He was so severely matted, and a kind-hearted gentleman did the only thing he could — he brought him food and water while hoping someone would come to help.”
Thankfully, someone had finally come.
Hall gently scooped up the little dog and rushed him to Camino Pet Hospital for emergency care. The team named him Aioli and immediately began trying to figure out what had happened to him.
Although X-rays didn’t reveal any obvious injuries, Aioli still couldn’t use his back legs. His condition remained a mystery, but his caregivers weren’t ready to give up on him.
They settled him into a comfortable crate and began treating him with steroids, rest and plenty of love, hoping that his mobility might eventually return.
“[W]e are not giving up on him,” Hall wrote on Facebook. “[W]e truly believe he has a chance to regain the use of his legs.”
The road ahead was uncertain, but Aioli had a dedicated team standing beside him. His rescuers watched over him around the clock, celebrating every small sign of progress and hoping that one day he might stand on his own again.
After a week of constant care, something wonderful happened.
Aioli began trying to put weight on his back legs.
“He’s starting to stand,” Hall wrote on Facebook. “I truly believe he’s going to walk again … [E]very single day he’s showing us just how strong he is.”
It was a small step, but for Aioli and the people caring for him, it meant everything. The little dog who had once been unable to move was beginning to show what his body could do.
Over the following days, his strength continued to improve. Then, after another 10 days of care, Aioli attempted something his rescuers had been longing to see: he tried to walk.
As his caregivers watched him take those first few tentative steps, emotions ran high. After everything he’d endured, seeing his little legs move again felt almost unbelievable.
“Watching those little legs move and seeing him take those steps feels like witnessing a miracle right before my eyes,” Hall wrote on Facebook. “This is what love, faith and believing in miracles can do. I am absolutely in awe.”
By the end of August, Aioli had regained control of his back legs and was taking every opportunity to trot around. He did experience a minor setback when he injured an elbow, but he continued working toward recovery and was finally beginning to feel like himself again.
His journey wasn’t over, though.
A little more than two months after his rescue, Aioli was receiving specialized laser treatments and physical therapy to help him continue making progress.
Hall explained on Facebook that the treatments were intended to “give him the very best chance of continuing to improve.”
While Aioli continued his recovery, another important chapter was still waiting for him: finding a loving forever home.
It’s impossible to know exactly what happened to Aioli before he was found in that alley. But what happened afterward shows just how much a difference compassionate people can make when a vulnerable animal has nowhere else to turn.
A stranger stopped to help him. Suzette Hall refused to give up on him. And a team of caregivers gave him the time, treatment and love he needed to fight for his future.
Aioli still has progress to make, but the little dog who once lay helplessly in an alley is now moving around on his own legs again.
And somewhere ahead of him is the loving home he deserves — a place where he can finally leave his painful past behind and begin the happy new life his rescuers have been fighting to give him.
