She’s such a good mom ❤️

Say hello to Winnie the Pooch, an affectionate 1-year-old beagle whose journey into motherhood recently surprised everyone with an unexpected litter size.

When Winnie was brought to the Kentucky Humane Society from another shelter, staff noticed right away that she was underweight, weighing only 23 pounds. Despite her small frame, an X-ray showed she was carrying three unusually large puppies. Because of their size, the team suspected the father may have been a larger breed. From that moment, they knew Winnie would likely need extra medical support during delivery.

According to KHS spokesperson Jen Harris, the biggest concern was the size of the puppies, which made it unlikely that Winnie could safely give birth on her own without veterinary help.

Dr. Bewley, the veterinarian caring for Winnie, soon realized the young dog was close to going into labor. Wanting to make sure everything went as smoothly as possible, she took Winnie in as a foster and prepared a safe, comfortable space for the birth.

Once labor began, Dr. Bewley stayed beside Winnie for hours, closely watching her condition. In the end, it became clear that an emergency C-section was the safest choice. She quickly contacted her team and met them at the clinic, where just 20 minutes later Winnie’s three puppies were successfully delivered.

The newborn pups were named Tigger, Eeyore and Piglet. Since then, Winnie and her babies have remained with Dr. Bewley, where they are recovering well and settling into life together.

Harris shared that Winnie and her puppies are doing wonderfully in foster care. Under Dr. Bewley’s attention, the puppies are nursing peacefully, and Winnie has started to relax enough to show her gentle, loving personality.

Rescuers hope Winnie’s story inspires more people to support local shelters, whether by fostering, volunteering, donating, or providing supplies. For animals like Winnie and her little ones, that kind of help can make a life-changing difference.

As Harris explained, opening your home to a mother dog and her puppies can have a huge impact, and for those who cannot foster, donations and needed items are always deeply appreciated.
