“I thought I was too late.”
Late last month, a truck driver pulled over beside a busy road in the United Kingdom when he heard faint, desperate cries coming from nearby bushes.
Curious and concerned, he followed the sound.
Hidden among the brambles was an empty cardboard box. Nearby, several frightened kittens were crouched in the undergrowth.
Realizing the babies needed more help than he could provide, the driver contacted Nicole McGawley of Carrington Animal Rescue.
She headed to the scene as quickly as she could.

When McGawley arrived, the first thing she noticed was the battered cardboard box.
It was covered in scratches and bite marks, suggesting the kittens had fought their way out after being abandoned inside.
For a moment, McGawley feared she had arrived too late.
Then she heard a few tiny meows.

The kittens were only around 5 weeks old and understandably terrified.
McGawley managed to catch the boldest of the group and held the little kitten close to her chest. She then tried to reach the others, but they were too frightened and kept retreating deeper into the vegetation.
Eventually, McGawley had to leave temporarily to pick up her daughter.
Driving away with only one kitten was heartbreaking, especially knowing the others were still out there.
But she had no intention of giving up.
She contacted Jade, another member of the rescue team, who headed to the area with her husband and sons.
A second truck driver, who had also spotted the kittens earlier that day, joined the effort.
Together, the group searched through the darkness for hours.
Their persistence paid off.
By the end of the search, they had managed to catch three more kittens.

There were still two missing.
The following day, another Good Samaritan discovered the final pair hiding in a tree.
At last, all six siblings were safe and together again.
Once they reached their foster home, the kittens were treated for fleas and given plenty of food. After everything they had been through, they could finally rest without having to worry about traffic, cold nights or hiding from strangers.
The siblings were named Dolly, Jolene, Andy, Tennessee, Doralee and Romeo.
Since their rescue, they have made a remarkable recovery.
Instead of huddling silently in bushes, the kittens are now eating well, playing constantly and racing around with the kind of chaotic energy healthy kittens are supposed to have.
Their lives began with abandonment beside a busy road, but thanks to one truck driver who stopped to investigate a few tiny cries — and a team of people who refused to leave any kitten behind — all six now have the chance to find loving homes of their own.
