Three years ago, Nigerian content creator Oreoluwa Osoba was struggling through one of the hardest periods of his life. During that time, he welcomed a small puppy named Duke into his home — a decision that would end up changing both of their lives.
Osoba has spoken openly about how low he was feeling at the time, explaining that he was dealing with depression and going through an especially difficult emotional period.
It didn’t take long for Duke to realize that his new human needed him.
On only their second night together, the puppy refused to stay away from Osoba. Duke barked and scratched at the bedroom door until he was allowed inside. That night, the two slept beside each other for the first time.
It marked the beginning of an unusually close bond.
As Duke grew, he and Osoba became nearly inseparable. They started doing almost everything together, and Osoba credits his dog with helping him find his way out of an extremely dark chapter.
He often tells people that Duke saved his life — something he says can be difficult for others to fully understand unless they know just how important the dog became to him.
That connection eventually became part of Osoba’s online identity. On social media, he is now known as Oga Duke, a name that essentially reflects his role as Duke’s parent.
Their relationship also has one particularly charming feature: Osoba talks to Duke as though he were another person.
What started when Duke was still a puppy has developed into daily conversations. Osoba sits with his dog and discusses everything from life lessons to safety, friendship and love — and many of those conversations are shared with his social media followers.
Osoba says there is almost nothing he won’t talk about with Duke.
Sometimes, the conversations involve practical advice. In one video, for example, Osoba warns Duke not to challenge animals or creatures that are much bigger than he is.
At other times, their chats are more emotional. Osoba reassures Duke that, as his dad, he will always be there to care for and protect him.
While some viewers may wonder how much of these conversations Duke actually understands, Osoba has little doubt that his dog is listening.
Whenever he begins speaking, Duke often becomes quiet and attentive, sitting still as though he is carefully taking in every word.
Friends have even asked Osoba whether he genuinely believes Duke understands him. His answer has remained simple: he believes he does.
Their bond is clearly a two-way relationship. Duke gave Osoba comfort and companionship when he needed it most, and Osoba now makes sure his dog receives that same affection in return.
