“She was really fixated on it …”
One quiet day in Oregon, a woman named M. was staying at a family member’s home with her dog, Billie, when an odd sound echoed through the den. At first, it was barely noticeable — just a faint scratching coming from inside the wall.
“It sounded like something was moving in there,” M. recalled. “I kept staring at the wall thinking, What on earth is that?”

Moments later, the mystery became much clearer. With a sudden thump, something fell straight down the chimney and landed inside the home’s wood-burning stove.
An Unexpected Visitor
Billie immediately became alert, staring intensely at the stove as if she already knew someone was inside. Curious — and slightly nervous — M. walked over and peeked through the glass door.
Staring back at her was a very startled squirrel.

The adventurous little animal had apparently been roaming on the roof and decided to explore the chimney, unaware that it led directly into a dark, sealed stove — and into the home of a very interested dog.
A Careful Rescue
Unsure how to safely handle the situation, M. waited until her family member returned home. Together, they moved Billie out of the room and opened a clear path to the outdoors.
As soon as the stove door was opened, the squirrel felt the fresh air and didn’t hesitate for a second.
“He saw the exit and just zoomed straight outside,” M. said.
Just like that, the uninvited guest was gone — unharmed and free again.

Billie Still Has Questions
Even though everything ended well, Billie missed the dramatic finale.
On their next visit to the house, she went straight back to the stove and peered inside, clearly expecting to find her mysterious friend again.
But the stove was empty. The squirrel had moved on.

A Reminder for Homeowners
A wildlife rescuer later explained that situations like this can easily become dangerous — especially if the stove is lit or the animal goes unnoticed for too long.
To prevent accidents, experts recommend installing mesh screens over chimney openings, which stop animals from entering in the first place.
Billie may secretly wish for another surprise visitor, but for everyone else’s safety, it’s best to keep wildlife adventures outdoors where they belong. 🐿️🔥
