A small terrier in Nottinghamshire, England, was rescued after spending two days trapped underground in a badger tunnel.
Cello, a 6-year-old Parson Russell terrier, was out for a walk with his owner, Stephen Smith, when he disappeared into a field.
Smith had let Cello and another dog off their leashes to explore, something they had done many times before.
After a while, the other dog returned, but Cello did not.
Smith began searching and eventually realized that Cello had entered a network of underground badger tunnels and could not find his way out.
The other dog helped lead Smith to the area where Cello was trapped.
A local lost-dog rescue group and firefighters were called to help, but rescuers could not immediately start digging because badgers are protected by law in the UK.
They first needed official permission to disturb the burrow.
Rescuers were also worried that badgers might still be inside and could become aggressive if they felt threatened.
Fortunately, permission was granted in time.
Using a camera, the rescue team located Cello underground and carefully dug down into the tunnel system.
After two days underground, Cello was finally pulled to safety.
He was stressed, and his eyes were sore from the dirt and darkness, but he quickly began to recover.
Once he had eaten, drunk some water and enjoyed a very long sleep, Cello was soon back to his normal friendly self.
He still enjoys walking through the fields, but his owner will probably be keeping a much closer eye on where he explores from now on.
