When Kennedy Yarbor was still in elementary school, she met a tiny bearded dragon who would soon become her closest companion. His name was Axel, and he’d just been adopted when Kennedy instantly fell in love with him.

Kennedy has adored reptiles for as long as anyone can remember, so Axel felt like the perfect match from the very beginning.

“He’s truly her best friend,” Kennedy’s mom, Kim, told The Dodo. “She was so excited to bring him home — he means the world to her!”

As Kennedy entered her teen years, Axel remained a constant source of comfort. He curls up near her while she works on homework and always seems to know when she needs extra support.

“He keeps her focused and helps calm her down,” Kim shared. “He’s been like an emotional support buddy all these years.”

In exchange for all the love he gives, Axel enjoys a life filled with cozy naps, attention, and all the care a bearded dragon could dream of.

Although he can’t tag along to school each day, Axel often gets to greet Kennedy during after-school pickups — and her classmates adore him.

Knowing how strong their bond is, Kennedy’s school made a sweet exception during senior year: Axel was invited to join her official yearbook photo session.

“Of course he had to be in the pictures!” Kim said. She even crafted a tiny graduation cap to match Kennedy’s.

Kennedy grinned from ear to ear during the photo shoot, and when she later saw the final pictures, she nearly cried from happiness.

Axel may not walk across the stage at graduation, but he’ll be cheering her on every step of the way — like he always has.

“He has helped her so much — from finding confidence to improving her mental health,” Kim said. “I can’t imagine how different things would be without him.”

As Kennedy prepares for the next chapter of her life, she’s bringing her passion for reptiles with her. She plans to study herpetology in college — inspired by the tiny lizard who has been by her side through everything.
