“Such a cute little dog.”
Last weekend, cycling enthusiast Jotto Vieira was riding along a remote dirt road in the Brazilian countryside with a friend when they noticed a small dark figure near the roadside.
As they got closer, they realized it was a tiny black-and-white puppy sitting completely alone.
The puppy seemed relieved to see someone. Wagging his tail, he rolled onto his back and showed his belly to the cyclists, almost as if he immediately understood that they were there to help.
Vieira quickly noticed that the little dog appeared exhausted, thirsty and hungry. He offered the puppy some water, and after a brief hesitation, the pup began drinking directly from his hand.
“We spotted this little dog on the road. All alone. Dying of thirst and hunger,” Vieira later said. “Now he’s out for a bike ride on his way to town.”
Leaving the puppy behind was never an option.
Vieira carefully picked him up and began carrying him toward the nearest town, about 3 miles away. The unexpected passenger stayed close to his rescuer throughout the journey.
Vieira knew the puppy likely wouldn’t survive for long if he remained alone on such a remote road.
“If I’d left him back there on the road, he would’ve died, poor thing,” Vieira said. “Some animal might have gotten him, or a truck could have hit him. I’m bringing him to town so someone can adopt him. Such a cute little dog.”
During the trip back, the little puppy repeatedly looked up at Vieira, appearing calm and trusting in his arms.
Because Vieira was away from home on a cycling trip, he wasn’t in a position to adopt the puppy himself. His main priority was getting the dog somewhere safe and finding someone who could properly care for him.
Once they reached the nearest town, Vieira found a local person who agreed to look after the puppy.
Although the cyclist had to continue on his journey, he didn’t intend to forget about the little dog he had rescued.
“I’ve made a commitment to go back to that town and check in on the pup,” Vieira said.
What had started as an ordinary bike ride through the countryside suddenly became something much more meaningful.
Vieira and his friend happened to be on the right road at exactly the right moment — and for one vulnerable puppy, their unexpected encounter may have made all the difference.
