“[It’s] the most heartbreaking thing …”
Just after sunrise, Suzette Hall — founder of Logan’s Legacy 29 — and volunteer Mary Nakiso arrived at a local car dealership. The business hadn’t opened yet, which made it easier for them to spot the stray pup they’d come to save: a gentle little dog who’d been living on the lot for weeks, desperately searching for the family he’d lost.
But once the doors opened for the day, the rescuers realized just how heartbroken he truly was.
“It was so quiet … until the first customers started walking through,” Hall wrote on Facebook. “And then the most devastating thing happened: He began trailing behind them. One after another. As if hoping, ‘Maybe this one is my family.’”
Watching him wander after each shopper shattered Hall and Nakiso’s hearts. The dog — later named Angel — had been described as skittish by the woman who’d been feeding him, Denisse Miranda. She said he rarely let anyone come close.
“Every day, Denisse brought him food, praying he’d eventually trust her enough to approach,” Hall wrote. “But every time she got near, he’d run.”
Knowing how fearful he was, Hall and Nakiso arrived early with a humane trap. They hoped that with tempting food and patience, Angel might walk in on his own. But the sound of the trap spooked him, and he sprinted away.
“We set the trap, but the noise scared him off,” Hall wrote. “Still, he kept circling back — like he wanted to trust us but couldn’t quite get there.”
They kept watching from afar, hoping he’d go inside before customers showed up. As buyers began to walk the lot, Hall expected Angel to flee again. Instead, what he did stunned them.
“He started following each person, his little tail wagging, his eyes saying, ‘Are you my family? Did you come for me?’” Hall wrote. “It crushed us.”
While Hall went to grab more equipment, Nakiso decided to try a different approach. She slowly walked toward Angel and simply offered him kindness.
“There she was — Mary — kneeling quietly with her hand out,” Hall wrote. “And Angel let her touch him. After hours upon hours, he finally let his guard fall. He sensed her kindness.”
With his trust finally won, their plan changed. Nakiso gently slipped a leash around his neck and carried him to her car.
“That was the miracle moment,” Hall wrote.
Hall immediately took Angel to her partner vet clinic, Camino Pet Hospital, where he received a full exam and a much-needed bath. Soon after, he settled into a foster home, where he’s been resting and healing.
Angel is still waiting for a forever family, and Hall believes the right match will find him soon. Until then, she treasures every update from his foster home, grateful that he’s no longer wandering the dealership alone.
“He’s so delicate, so full of love,” Hall wrote. “But now he’s safe. No more parking lots. No more running. No more following strangers hoping they were his family. Because soon … he’ll finally have one.”
