It’s not every day that you come across a random 2-week-old kitten wandering around your house. But that’s exactly what happened to Massachusetts homeowner Elizabeth Egeland, who found a stray kitten in her basement last month.

She had no idea where the kitten had come from. Bewildered, she checked her basement security camera for any clues.

Egeland was shocked to see that the camera had captured something out of a movie. The footage showed a stray tomcat coming in through the cat door, holding a kitten in his mouth.

The stray cat, whom Egeland named Red, had been paying visits to her home, stopping by frequently for a meal or a warm nap. She was touched that he felt comfortable enough at her house to trust her with such an important delivery.

β€œIt’s like my Disney princess moment,” Egeland said. Egeland reached out to everyone in her neighborhood to figure out where the kitten had come from. But no one knew. How Red came across this kitten and why he took her to Egeland’s home remains a mystery.

It turns out that Red brought the kitten to safety just in time. According to Egeland, a big storm hit the area right after he brought her inside.

Egeland has been working hard to make the kitten feel at home and to give her the attention and love she needs. She nicknamed the kitten Fluffernutter after her soft, fuzzy fur. Since dropping off Fluffernutter, Red has been coming back regularly to check in on her. It’s been surprising for Egeland to see how actively Red has been involving himself in caring for the kitten.

β€œHe bathes [her] … he watches out for her. And it’s the cutest thing ever. I’ve never seen a male cat act this way,” Egeland said. β€œHe likes to sit there with me when it’s bottle-feeding time.”

Thanks to Red and Egeland’s care, the kitten’s healthy, growing quickly and already climbing β€œanything she can get her claws into.” Egeland and her boyfriend have their hands full with their other pets, so her boyfriend’s sister plans to adopt little Fluffernutter once she’s weaned. While Fluffernutter will soon be ready to move to her new home, Egeland will always have the security camera footage to look back on.

β€œI’m so glad I have that forever,” she said.
