An Unexpected Late-Night Alert
Late one evening, Magee Humes received a notification on her phone that instantly made her uneasy.
As the executive director of the Michigan Animal Rescue League (MARL), Humes regularly monitors the shelter’s security system—even when she is at home. When the outdoor motion sensors were suddenly triggered after closing time, she suspected that something was wrong.
She quickly opened the live security feed and saw a single cardboard box sitting outside the door of the shelter’s intake lobby.
The sight was all too familiar. Boxes left outside animal shelters often contain frightened pets in urgent need of care.
Five Tiny Lives Inside
Humes immediately drove to the shelter, hoping she would arrive before it was too late.
When she lifted the lid of the box, she discovered five tiny kittens huddled together inside. Fortunately, they appeared to be unharmed, although their fur was dirty and covered in fleas.
Humes and several staff members carried the kittens indoors and began caring for them one at a time. Since the little animals had a severe flea problem, the team spent part of the night gently bathing and cleaning them.
A Worried Visitor at the Window
As the staff continued washing the kittens, they noticed an adult cat standing outside the window.
She stared into the shelter, meowing repeatedly and showing an unusual amount of interest in the kittens. At first, the team wondered whether she was simply a stray cat passing through the area.
However, the way she watched the babies made them suspect that there was a deeper connection.
The Security Footage Reveals the Truth
The staff reviewed the shelter’s security recordings and soon discovered what had happened.
The same adult cat had been inside the cardboard box with the kittens. Shortly after being abandoned, she climbed out and disappeared into the darkness, possibly attempting to investigate her unfamiliar surroundings.
By the time she returned, shelter workers had already brought her babies inside. Confused and distressed, she remained near the building, searching for them.
A Heartwarming Family Reunion
The team quickly opened the door and allowed the mother cat to enter.
She rushed toward her kittens, clearly relieved to find them safe. The reunion was emotional for everyone watching. Despite everything she had experienced, the mother cat was friendly with the staff and seemed to understand that they were there to protect her family.
The shelter named her Post-It, while her five kittens received equally creative names: Crayola, Scotch, Expo, Elmer and Sharpie.
Safe, Warm and Together
Post-It and her babies were soon placed in a loving foster home, where they could recover in a peaceful and comfortable environment.
Although the MARL team was saddened that another family of animals had been abandoned outside the shelter, they were grateful that the motion sensors detected the box before the kittens or their mother were harmed.
Post-It and her kittens are now safe, healthy and surrounded by care. Once they are ready, they will begin the search for permanent homes filled with the love and security they deserve.
