“[I]t felt like fate …”

When Grace lost her beloved cat, Ichabod, earlier this year, she felt as if her heart had shattered. Ichabod, whom she lovingly called Ichy, had been her best friend. After years of living with kidney disease, he passed away, leaving Grace devastated and unsure if she would ever meet another cat who felt as special as he did.

A few weeks later, while still grieving, Grace decided to volunteer at her local shelter. She wasn’t ready to adopt again. She only wanted to spend time with adoptable cats, help socialize them and maybe find a little comfort in being around animals.

That was when she noticed a black-and-white cat named Mr. Wash.

He immediately caught her attention. One of the first things Grace saw was that Mr. Wash was FIV positive, just like Ichy had been. FIV is a lifelong virus that affects a cat’s immune system, but many FIV-positive cats can still live normal, happy lives. Grace worried that people might overlook him because of the diagnosis.

Then she walked closer to his cage.

The moment Mr. Wash saw her, he perked up. When their eyes met, Grace felt something she couldn’t explain. His face reminded her so strongly of Ichy that she felt shaken.

Then Mr. Wash gently headbutted her, just like Ichy used to do.

Grace felt overwhelmed. She texted her loved ones about him and wondered if she should bring him home. But Ichy’s death was still too recent, and she knew she had more grieving to do before opening her heart again.

She left the shelter, but she couldn’t stop thinking about Mr. Wash. For days afterward, she checked the shelter’s website. When his photo disappeared from the adoption page, she felt both relieved and regretful. She was happy he had found a home, but part of her wondered if she had missed a sign from Ichy.

Months went by. Grace continued grieving and even fostered another cat, hoping she might feel a bond. But the connection wasn’t the same. After that foster cat went to a new home, Grace realized she might finally be ready to adopt again.

She told her therapist she wished Ichy could send her a sign.

Soon after, Grace started checking the shelter’s website again. One day, she saw a familiar face.

Mr. Wash was back.

This time, Grace had no doubts. She knew he was meant to be her cat.

The next morning, she went to the shelter with his adoption paperwork ready. Before long, she was walking out with Mr. Wash in a carrier and a joy she hadn’t felt since before Ichy passed.

Grace gave him a new name: Bo, short for Bones. The name came from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, the same story that inspired Ichabod’s name.

Since Bo came home, Grace has noticed sweet similarities between him and Ichy. Like Ichy, Bo wins over everyone he meets, even people who usually say they are not cat people.

But Bo is also his own cat. Ichy was quiet and rarely meowed, while Bo talks to Grace all day. Ichy loved calm naps, while Bo races through the house with bursts of energy.

Bo has not replaced Ichy, and Grace is still healing from the loss. But he has brought comfort, laughter and companionship back into her life.

Grace never expected to adopt when she first volunteered at the shelter. Now, with Bo by her side, she feels certain their meeting was meant to happen — as if Ichy sent her a new friend exactly when she needed one.
