“Now this is a first!” 😲
A barred owl found trapped in a Connecticut backyard recently presented wildlife rescuers with one of the strangest cases they had ever handled.
A Place Called Hope first learned about the bird after receiving a photograph from concerned residents. In the image, the owl stood almost motionless with his left wing raised awkwardly above his body. His unusual position immediately suggested that he was unable to move freely.
The people who discovered him contacted animal control in West Hartford. Officer Kim arrived at the property and soon identified the problem: the owl had become caught on a plumbing snake, a flexible wire tool used to clear blocked drains.
A sharp curve at the end of the tool had punctured the owl’s wing and passed completely through the skin. As the distressed bird attempted to pull himself free, the wire caused further pain and damage to the surrounding tissue.
Officer Kim gently removed him from the equipment and transported him to A Place Called Hope, where veterinary specialists examined the injury. Although the wound was serious, the owl was otherwise in good physical condition, giving the team confidence that he could recover.
The rescuers repaired and treated the damaged area before beginning a rehabilitation plan. Cold laser therapy was included to support tissue healing and reduce inflammation while the owl rested in a safe environment.
His recovery will not happen immediately, and he will require continued observation and medical care. Still, the team believes the strong and resilient bird has a good chance of eventually returning to the wild.
The unusual incident also served as an important warning for local residents. Wildlife rehabilitation staff encouraged people to store tools, recreational equipment and other outdoor objects securely, since animals can become trapped or injured by items that appear harmless.
Accidents like this may be uncommon, but the rescuers stressed that unexpected dangers can arise whenever loose equipment is left where wildlife can reach it. Fortunately, this owl was discovered in time and is now receiving the care he needs.
