The staff had never seen a turtle who looked like that.

This past winter, several sea turtles in critical condition were brought to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center after being rescued from the chilly waters off New England. Each of them was suffering from cold stunning, a dangerous condition caused when ocean temperatures drop too quickly.

When turtles become cold stunned, the cold leaves them sluggish and unable to control their buoyancy. As a result, they often float at the surface, where they are especially vulnerable and in urgent need of care.

The rescue center gave the turtles tea-inspired names, including Chai, Earl Grey, Boba, Darjeeling, Matcha, Jasmine, Peppermint, Chamomile, and Oolong. Staff immediately began treating them with food, fluids, and medical support.

As they examined Earl Grey more closely, however, they noticed that this turtle did not look quite like the others. At first, the team believed Earl Grey was a loggerhead, but some physical features suggested otherwise. The turtle had a more sharply hooked beak and a rounder shell, both traits more commonly associated with Kemp’s ridley sea turtles.

Curious, the staff decided to run a genetic test.

The results revealed something remarkable: Earl Grey was a first-generation hybrid, born from a loggerhead father and a Kemp’s ridley mother.

The discovery amazed everyone at the center. Hybrid sea turtles are already quite uncommon, and Earl Grey’s case was even more unusual because Kemp’s ridleys are the most endangered sea turtle species in the world.

The center noted that this kind of pairing is rare, though scientists continue learning more about sea turtle populations and how these unusual cases happen.

Since arriving at the facility, Earl Grey has been steadily improving with the help of the care team. The staff say the turtle has plenty of personality and is gaining strength a little more each day.

Once fully recovered, Earl Grey will be released back into the wild. Until then, the team at the Georgia Sea Turtle Center is making the most of their time with one of the most unusual turtles they have ever treated.
