They had to get creative.

Brad Gates has spent years helping wild animals out of difficult situations. As the founder of Gates Wildlife Control, a family-run humane wildlife removal business in Ontario, Canada, he knows that every rescue requires patience โ€” especially when a mother is trying to protect her babies.

In 2023, Gates received a call about a family of raccoons that had made a home inside a garage at a worksite.

He immediately headed over with his daughter, Cassandra, to see if they could safely reunite the family and return them to the wild.

Inside the garage, the rescuers discovered a mother raccoon and her babies tucked inside a stack of plastic coils.

But the moment the mother spotted the two humans approaching, she panicked and hurried into the rafters above the garage.

Her babies, however, were still trapped below.

Brad and Cassandra carefully took apart the stack of coils and retrieved the tiny raccoons. Once they had the babies safely in their hands, they held them up where their mother could see them.

They hoped that seeing her babies โ€” and realizing the rescuers weren’t trying to hurt them โ€” would convince her to come back down.

Eventually, they placed one of the babies in an open area and stepped away.

Then they waited.

Their patience paid off.

The mother raccoon cautiously climbed down from the rafters. As soon as she reached her baby, she gently grabbed the little one by the scruff of the neck and hurried away.

She carried her baby toward the nearby woods, slipping underneath a fence and disappearing into the safety of the wilderness.

But three more babies were still waiting.

The rescuers placed the remaining kits in a wildlife release box where their mother could easily find them. They then positioned a camera nearby so they could keep an eye on what happened next without disturbing the family.

It wasn’t long before the devoted mother returned.

One by one, she collected her remaining babies and carried them away to safety.

Thanks to Brad and Cassandra’s patience and careful approach, the entire raccoon family was reunited. Instead of being separated or forced to remain in the garage, the mother and her babies were able to return to the wild together โ€” exactly where they belonged.
